Environment

Foskor is committed to responsible environmental stewardship as an integral part of its mining and industrial operations. The company’s strategy focuses on minimising environmental impact through pollution prevention and resource efficiency, ensuring continuous monitoring and improvement aligned with regulatory requirements and international standards (ISO 9001, 45001 and 14001) as well as encouraging proactive stakeholder engagement, especially with communities and authorities.

1. Climate Change

Our dedication to environmental responsibility is a core aspect of our operations. We acknowledge the pressing need to address climate change and its effects. Through sustainable practices and efforts to lower our carbon footprint, we strive to lessen our impact on the climate and support environmental resilience starting with our local surroundings.

We are committed to understanding and responding to the challenges of climate change and we aim to reduce emissions by advancing energy efficiency, embracing renewable energy, and implementing strategies that allow us to lessen our environmental footprint and support global climate action.

2. ENERGY

Efficient energy management remains a priority for us, as South Africa continues to face a rise in energy demand year-on-year. This growing demand highlights the need for both businesses and individuals to reduce their energy intensity through the development and implementation of energy-efficient programmes and initiatives and has prompted us to look into alternative green energy solutions for our operations to reduce our carbon footprint.

3. water STEWARDSHIP

Water is a vital resource for our operation and host communities, and therefore using water sustainability is crucial to Foskor’s operations and environmental stewardship. Working in a resource intensive industry has shown us how crucial it is to use water responsibly and by implementing sustainable water management practices, we aim to minimize our environment impact, ensure regulatory compliance and contribute to the conversation of vital water resources.

4. Waste management

Efficient waste management remains a key priority for us as we work to minimise our environmental footprint and align with circular economy principles which are in line with Duty-of-Care; Cradle-to-Grave; The-Polluter-Pays and the Precautionary Principles. We aim to manage waste responsibly across our sites by actively seeking opportunities for recycling, reuse, and waste reduction wherever feasible.

5. AIR QUALITY management

Air quality concerns are primarily linked to elevated dust levels. Extended dry periods, combined with rising temperatures and stronger winds, contribute to increased dust generation which impacts surrounding communities. We therefore promote ongoing operational improvements to reduce levels of emissions and manage air quality at our operations.

6. BIODIVERSITY

South Africa is richly endowed with an array of indigenous fauna and flora. We duly recognise the importance of managing the biodiversity-related impacts of our operations. We understand that biodiversity forms an inextricable part of our operations and, therefore, needs to manage our impacts with mindful consideration.
